It’s cold here in London, but these fresh NY-style jams from Darlyn Vlys are heating up the joint. Airy percussion gives the plenty of vibe and movement. Rich piano chords give the track a vintage, classic feel, while squalling walls of low-bit noise add a techier element to the mix.
Prince De Bel Air is a serious treat. Bootsy Collins would be proud of this jam… Does it actually sample the Fresh one? Answers on a postcard… but one thing’s for sure, it certainly channels West Philadephia’s funkiest in all his neon-capped glory. Now get this one the boombox and do you best Carlton dance.
Samuel Dan’s mix takes things a little deeper. Warm reverbs and deep echoes give it that classic Detroit feel and there’s a gentle nod to Theo Parrish in the arrangement, and the surprising break-down bust-out surprises that keep dancers on their toes.
Physical, like the name suggests is a straight floor workout. Vocals and a driving piano line will keep you dancing like you’re on a funky route march, while the massive kicks and tumbling snares are all you need to keep you going.
