John Barber is clearly a man who knows how to traverse the fine line between house techno. The influences in this EP are clear - from Carl Cox and Paul Johnson to Samuel L Sessions and even vintage Blake Baxter - and Barber's tracks sit beautifully in that sweet no-mans land between the two.
Loaded is a deceptively simply sounding tech house groove with some nice upfront snares and uplifting bass. Fresh, but with a classic vibe.
Lumina has a tribal roll, but with the Detroit edge we've come expect from Mr Barber. Deep bass and hypnotic pads drive the track while slightly sinister pitched down vocals add an element of darkness.
That dark, tribal element is really brought out by Clio and SLZ in their reworking of Lumina. They dub out that bassline, ramp up the echo chamber and a heavily dose of paranoia to the mix. Voodoo funk techno at its finest.
Mekong is a full-frontal assault of huge upfront kicks, skittering snares and pressure synths. The track has a definite old school house flavour, but it has definitely been designed for the modern floor.
